11. May. “Lampyridae” by Kelsey Hoff

Your eyes make me feel trapped inside myself.
Alone in my bed, I could move my feet
and make static sparks* appear
like asterisks
I could remember all the different kinds of sparks*
bonfires
*lightning bugs
brakes

With you, there is one steady candle flame
burning like a yellow moon—
this is a constant reminder
of all the things I’ve read about intimacy*
This is highlighter yellow

and I want to be like a cloud of fireflies,
a trick of the light*
the way they disappear and reappear but never totally vanish.
A memory* glimmering in the purple dusk.

*Fireflies are constantly being sucked through
wormholes of peaceful night air.
What I mean to say is they teleport*
like footnotes
like hyperlinks
I can remember all the places to hide.
I had a night light
and glow-in-the-dark stars
I used to be afraid of things in the dark
and now I’m afraid* I am one of them
The *trick of the light is that you can’t use it to see
and still keep your hiding place*

like a blinking cursor
I want to be a beautiful possibility*
but I also kind of want to disappear,
energy* vacillating in between
created and destroyed.

“Lampyridae” at 57th Street Books

Finally! Here are some images from our current installation, Kelsey Hoff’s poem, Lampyridae, at 57th Street Books.

As we mentioned before, we are a little behind schedule, so you still have plenty of time to come see this fantastic window display (thanks to 57th Street Books for the thematic selection of books and surprises) in person. We’ll be sharing more documentation soon, but please enjoy these images in the meantime.

June’s Writer

We have selected our final featured writer, so please join us in congratulating Harnidh Kaur! Harnidh’s poem, How to Drape a Sari, will be published in our June installation. We’ll make another announcement when we determine the location.

Harnidh is a 21 year old student from India. Her first book, The Inability of Words, is slated for a 2016 release.

Thank you to everyone who has shared your writing with us over the past year.

May Installation Moving to 57th Street Books

You may have noticed that we had to remove our display from Hyde Park Records – technical difficulties, as they say.

We are now happy to announce that we will be reinstalling Kelsey Hoff’s poem, Lampyridae, at 57th Street Books! We’re going to put a fresh 3 weeks on the clock for this piece, which means that our final (June) installation will be moved back to the middle of that month. (As usual, the piece will be archived on our website once it’s been taken off the display.)

We think you’ll all enjoy visiting Kelsey’s piece at 57th Street Books, which is simply an amazing destination for any lover of literature.

Thank you for your patience while the display has been down. We’re very grateful to the folks at 57th Street Books for stepping up! We will be installing Lampyridae on Monday, May 23.

You can check it out in person at:
1301 East 57th Street

Store hours are:
10:00 – 8:00 everyday.

10. April. “Cables” by Caroline Knickmeier

my first real hippies
I agreed minus the drugs
they’d lived on a commune
high in the mountains
where years later I caught trout
a professor’s social experiment

her hand went up and down like a ‘coaster
she said their relationship had been like that
she said life was like that
she made huckleberry pancakes
and scared the black bear out of the garden

he took me to the lake
he wrote songs for me
he gutted fish for me
I thought he meant every word he said

she was better than jumper cables
he said, for a bed companion
what I’d always feared, here’s proof
that he wanted to marry, not just me

2000 miles away
as the light across the parking lot fades
in long orange rectangles
the power line catches and gleams
beauty that provides
understanding her hand will rise

Awesome Foundation’s 5th Anniversary

Literature Emitting Diodes was made possible by a grant from the Chicago chapter of the Awesome Foundation, so we were so excited to join other grantees and trustees to celebrate their 5th anniversary last night.

We also had an opportunity to win a grant extension through a quick pitch on stage and then a round of questions and live voting. We didn’t get the extension, but we had a great time hearing about all the other projects. It was incredibly inspiring to see what can happen when the community comes together to support creative interventions in the everyday.

Take some time to look through the Chicago Awesome Foundation’s website and see some of the other recent/ongoing projects – there are some fantastic things going on right here in the second city!

May Installation at Hyde Park Records
