Midland at Makes Scents

At last! We installed Rebecca Pelky’s poem, “Midland,” at Makes Scents this evening… and then it rained. A lot.

So here are a couple photos for those of you without umbrellas. Don’t worry – the installation will up until mid-September, so there will be plenty of good weather for an enjoyable read.

As always, the LED display will be running 24/7, so stop by anytime you have a hankering for poetry.

As I photographed through the rain from the comfort of a parked car, I captured two moments that seemed fitting: “windows” and “salt-rot.” Come and see the rest in person!

We wish to extend a hearty congratulations to Rebecca Pelky!
Rebecca is the winner of the Columbia Daily Tribune’s LED Writing Competition!

R-PelkyRebecca Pelky is a Ridgel Fellow at the University of Missouri, Columbia, where she studies poetry and Native American Literature. She has earned an MFA in creative writing and a BS in Zoology from Northern Michigan University, as well as a BA in English from Indiana University. Her poetry and nonfiction can be found in Booth, River Styx, Dunes Review, and The Chattahoochee Review, among other journals.

Rebecca’s poem, Midland, will be displayed 24/7 on our scrolling LED sign at Makes Scents from August 16th to September 15th. Check it out and see for yourself why our judges thought this fantastic poem should light up downtown!

We also want to thank our judges, Aarik Danielsen and Jennifer McCauley for taking time to read the many submissions we received, and making hard decisions among all of the deserving pieces.

Thanks also to the City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs for supporting the prize. It’s great to live in a community where the city values the contributions of local writers.

We have some exciting news (pun intended) about the LED Tribune Writing Competition: the winning piece will be installed at Makes Scents in downtown Columbia. Makes Scents has a beautiful, brand new location at 25 South 9th Street, right next to Kaldi’s coffee.

Makes Scents is a purveyor of quality, ethically-produced fragrances. We’re sure this will be the best-smelling installation yet, so stop by during business hours to treat your nose while you read!

We can’t wait to light up their new window with local literature. We’ll be announcing the winning writer very soon, so stay tuned!

That means this is your last chance to win a cash prize, and see your work displayed on a scrolling LED sign in downtown Columbia!

Unbound Book Festival

We want to extend a huge thank you to the Columbia Daily Tribune for sponsoring our table at the Unbound Book Festival. We had a truly wonderful time sharing our Partial Press publications with Columbia’s readers, and encouraging writers to enter our new LED writing competition!

We were honored to present “A Good Song” by Jennifer Maritza McCauley, and so pleased by the enthusiastic reception received by the piece and the LED display itself!

New LED Contest with the Columbia Daily Tribune

We have officially launched our newest writing competition, run by the Columbia Daily Tribune. You can read the details here on the LED website, and easily enter your submission.

Details are in the links above, but here are the basics:
We are accepting submissions until through June 30, 2017. The chosen piece will be displayed in downtown Columbia, and the winning writer will receive a cash prize.

We are so grateful for the support of the Columbia Daily Tribune and the City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs, without whom we could not have offered this exciting new opportunity for Mid-Missouri writers.
